The theory syllabus for the Yachtmaster Coastal / Yachtmaster Offshore Theory Course is an ideal progression from the Day Skipper theory course. Once you have achieved the award of a Coastal Skipper or Yachtmaster theory certificate you can then proceed to undertake the Yachtmaster Coastal Practical course or the RYA / MCA Examinations after you have amassed sufficient sea time and practical experience.

The course includes some revision of the Day Skipper theory and then advances to a more in-depth understanding of pilotage, offshore and coastal navigation by day and night together with a greater depth of knowledge of collision regulations and meteorology. The Yachtmaster Coastal /Yachtmaster  Offshore syllabus does require all students to have already previously achieved the Day Skipper Theory Certificate or equivalent qualification or experience.

  • Pre-course experience: Knowledge equivalent to the Day Skipper shorebased course
  • Assumed Knowledge: Navigation to Day Skipper standard and some practical experience is recommended
  • Course content: Navigation, meteorology, collision avoidance, safety and passage planning
  • Ability after course: Understand the principles of navigating for coastal and offshore passages by day or by night
  • Minimum duration: 70 hours
