The Essential Navigation & Seamanship Course is an inspiring classroom and online course for anyone interested in sailing, motorboating, sea angling or diving - pretty much anything else on water!  This course will give you the essential knowledge needed when you are afloat, from navigation to safety and seamanship to passage planning.

This course is aimed at a wide audience, including anyone new to sailing, motor boating, sea angling and diving as well as experienced dinghy and keelboat sailors and inshore racers.
This course is the perfect starting point and stepping stone from beginner towards the ‘in-depth’ Day Skipper Shorebased Course which the RYA and SONAS have been running for many years.

  • Pre-course experience: None
  • Assumed Knowledge: None
  • Course content: Charts and publications, safety, buoyage, tidal awareness, basic navigation and pilotage, rules of the road, electronic navigation, anchoring, weather forecasts, passage planning and much more
  • Ability after course: A basic awareness and understanding of navigation and safety
